The latest report published by PAHO presents a detailed analysis of the dengue situation in the Americas up to Epidemiological Week (EW) 24 of 2024, with data updated as of July 5, 2024. During this period, 10,141,300 suspected cases of dengue were reported, representing an accumulated incidence of 1,074 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This figure shows a significant increase of 232% compared to the same period in 2023 and an increase of 421% compared to the average of the last five years.
Confirmed Cases and Mortality
Of the suspected cases, 5,207,166 (51%) were confirmed by laboratory tests and 10,769 (0.1%) were classified as severe dengue. The case fatality rate of dengue stood at 0.051%, with a total of 5,200 deaths reported. Specifically, during EW 24, 131,447 new suspected cases were recorded, of which 198 were classified as severe dengue and there were 34 deaths, resulting in a case fatality rate of 0.026%.
Distribution by Countries
Twenty-three countries and territories in the region reported dengue cases during EW 24. The countries with the highest number of cases are detailed in Table 1 of the report, highlighting a notable increase in several of them compared to the average of the last four weeks.
Analysis by Subregions
Central America and Mexico: 11,966 new suspected cases were reported during EW 24, reflecting an increase of 103% compared to the same period in 2023 and 172% compared to the average of the last five years. Specific increases were 60% in Costa Rica, 38% in Guatemala, and 46% in Mexico compared to the average of their previous four epidemiological weeks.
Caribbean: 401 new suspected dengue cases were recorded in EW 24, with an increase of 342% compared to the same period in 2023 and 195% compared to the average of the last five years. In the Dominican Republic, cases increased by 7% compared to the average of the previous four weeks.
Andean Subregion: During EW 24, 14,960 new suspected cases were reported, with an increase of 36% compared to the same period in 2023 and a rise of 215% compared to the average of the last five years.
Southern Cone: 104,087 new suspected cases were reported in EW 24, showing an increase of 266% compared to the same period in 2023 and 454% compared to the average of the last five years.
Circulation of Serotypes
In the region of the Americas, 28 countries and territories reported the circulation of all four dengue serotypes (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4). Brazil, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Panama reported the simultaneous circulation of these four serotypes.
