Local Dengue Case in Hillsborough County, Florida

U.S. health authorities have reported a locally acquired case of dengue in Hillsborough County, Florida.

Hillsborough County is located in the central-western part of the state and includes the city of Tampa.

Surveillance and prevention efforts have been intensified through aerial fumigation.

This is the eighth case of local dengue transmission in the state this year; the other cases were reported in Miami-Dade County (6) and Pasco County (1).

In addition to local dengue transmission in Florida, 222 cases have been reported in 2024 among individuals with a history of travel to a dengue-endemic area in the two weeks prior to onset. Miami-Dade and Broward counties have seen the highest number of travel-associated dengue cases with 95 and 37 cases, respectively. Hillsborough County has reported 16 cases of dengue related to international travel to date.
