Information about Dengue in Sudan

August 4, 2024

Historically, dengue was mainly limited to the eastern region of Sudan, with reports of infection dating back to 1906. However, in the past six years, the disease has spread to the southern and western regions of the country due to changes in physical, social, and environmental factors caused by war and the humanitarian crisis.

This has led to major epidemics in refugee camps, making dengue a serious public health problem throughout Sudan. Factors such as urbanization, international travel, trade, and inadequate vector control are believed to be responsible for this resurgence of the disease.

On November 8, 2022, a dengue outbreak caused the death of at least five people in the state of North Kordofan.

On November 23, 2022, the Sudanese Ministry of Health reported 3,326 cases of dengue across Sudan, with 23 deaths.

This was the most severe dengue outbreak in more than a decade, particularly in North and South Kordofan and the Red Sea state.
