Increase in imported cases of dengue fever in mainland France (1,679 cases so far this year).

April 29, 2024

Given the unprecedented situation of the number of imported cases of dengue fever in mainland France since 2023 and the rise in reported cases since January 1, 2024, Public Health France is calling for vigilance from everyone to limit the risk of outbreaks in the territory.

Since 2023, the number of imported cases of dengue fever reported in France has reached unprecedented levels, with over 60% of them coming from the French West Indies, where an epidemic has been ongoing since mid-2023 and between January 1 and April 19.

In 2024, Public Health France reported 1,679 cases of imported dengue fever, compared to 131 in the same period in 2023. During this period, 82% of the cases returned from the French West Indies.

Due to the very active circulation of dengue fever in the French territories of the West Indies (Martinique and Guadeloupe) and the significant increase in the number of imported cases to mainland France since early 2024, Public Health France is urging healthcare professionals to remain vigilant in diagnosing and reporting cases to health authorities, as well as travelers as the mosquito activity season, carrying the virus, approaches between May and November.
