Increase in Dengue Cases Among Travelers to Egypt

December 20, 2023

According to the Robert Koch Institute of Germany (RKI), since the end of 2017, there have been regular reports of dengue cases in travelers returning from Egypt, with a total of 53 confirmed infections as of December 12, 2023.

These include 49 symptomatic cases and 4 asymptomatic findings. Although no cases were reported during 2021 and 2022 (probably due to the impact of the pandemic on tourism and travel), a significant increase has been observed in 2023, especially since July, with 28 new cases registered.

The dengue situation in Egypt is concerning, as until a few years ago, this disease was unusual in the region. Most reported cases are related to stays in Hurghada and other Red Sea locations, both in hotels and private accommodations. It is speculated that mosquito control may be less efficient in local settlements compared to hotels, increasing the risk of infection.

Despite the recent increase, the risk of dengue infection for travelers in Egypt remains low. However, this change in trend is notable, as more than 1.5 million people traveled from Germany to Egypt in the first ten months of 2023, with a large number visiting the tourist region of Hurghada.
