Sri Lanka has recorded 35,228 cases of dengue fever, with over 8,600 cases in May and 20 related deaths to date in 2026. This represents a 30% increase compared to the previous year.
The Western Province accounts for 50% of the cases, particularly in Colombo, Gampaha, and Kalutara. The surge in infections is straining hospital capacity, exacerbated by monsoon rains and flooding.
Legal action has been authorized against establishments with mosquito breeding sites, and a mosquito control and cleanup program will be implemented from June 8 to 10, 2026.
