The Hawaii Department of Health has detected the dengue virus in a wastewater sample from Hawaii Island, collected on August 24 at the Hilo Wastewater Treatment Plant. The results were reported on August 31. There are currently no active cases of dengue being tracked in the county. Seven cases reported in Hawaii this year have been linked to travel to Pacific islands. The virus is transmitted by mosquitoes and is common in tropical and subtropical areas. Caution and medical consultation are recommended if symptoms develop after traveling to endemic areas.
