Colombia faces a potential surge in dengue fever due to the arrival of El Niño.
The country has already recorded more than 50,000 cases in 2026, with 20,000 hospitalizations and 31 deaths.
El Niño, associated with the warming of the Pacific Ocean, could increase temperatures, reduce rainfall, and cause droughts, creating favorable conditions for the reproduction of the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
The mosquito’s life cycle accelerates, and its transmission capacity increases. Strengthening prevention measures is recommended, such as eliminating breeding sites, using insect repellent and protective clothing, in addition to vaccination.
