Civic authorities in Delhi have intensified mosquito control campaigns and surveillance of mosquito-borne diseases following the detection of a virulent strain of dengue type 2 (DENV-2).
Genomic sequencing confirmed the presence of DENV-2 in the majority of cases. No dengue-related deaths have been reported so far this year. As of August 8, 230 dengue cases had been reported, with an additional 76 cases acquired in other states.
The Minister of Health reported a total of 1,179 cases in Delhi and 210-212 cases in the North Carolina Region. Data from previous years show varying numbers of cases and deaths. Dengue type 2 was predominant in the 2015 outbreak, with 15,867 cases and 60 deaths.
