Virginia health officials are investigating a confirmed case of dengue in a resident with no known out-of-state travel. This is the first documented case of locally acquired dengue in Virginia.
Transmission by local mosquitoes from an imported case is suspected. There is no evidence of ongoing transmission, and the potential risk is considered low. Dengue can range from asymptomatic to severe, with an incubation period of 5-7 days and symptoms such as fever, headache, and rash. Severe dengue is a medical emergency that can cause shock, hemorrhaging, and death.
