Dengue in Shivamogga, Karnataka, India

July 1, 2024

Dengue cases in Shivamogga, Karnataka, India, have surpassed 200, raising concerns as the monsoon season begins.

Compared to the previous year, the incidence of dengue has increased considerably. Last year, 456 cases were reported for the entire year, with only a few cases until June. After June, the number of cases increased. However, in 2024, the situation is more alarming: cases have already exceeded 200 in June, and the numbers are expected to continue rising.

A breakdown of cases by taluk shows a widespread problem: 64 cases in Shivamogga, 15 in Hosnagar, 24 in Sagar, 72 in Shikaripur, 21 in Soraba, 10 in Thirthahalli, and 25 in Bhadravati. Compared to last year, when only 83 cases were recorded by June 20, this year’s figure has increased to 236.

Currently, the number of cases is doubling daily. During the summer, stagnant water in drains, sewers, and channels provides a breeding ground for mosquito larvae, leading to an increase in cases.
