Dengue in Puerto Rico (EW21) 1,292 cases reported

Puerto Rican health authorities have reported 1,292 cases of dengue so far this year. The cases belong to serotype 3 (DENV-3), with 497 cases (46.54%), while a total of 252 (23.60%) are of serotype 1 (DENV-1), and 319 (29.87%) correspond to serotype 2 (DENV-2).

The five municipalities with the highest incidence rates this year are Rincón (526.77), Canóvanas (148.81), Aguada (123.24), Carolina (90.43), and San Juan (88.82).

The municipality with the highest number of cases as of May 26 is San Juan with 304 (23.53%), followed by Carolina with 140 (10.84%), Rincón with 80 (6.19%), Bayamón with 72 (5.57%), and Canóvanas with 63 (4.88%).

During this period, a total of 742 (57.43%) hospitalized cases have been reported. Of the total cases with a positive laboratory test for dengue, 79 (6.11%) meet the World Health Organization (WHO) definition of severe dengue cases.

In the last week, 88 new cases were recorded, the highest weekly number this year. The level of cases remains above the epidemic threshold, the historical median, and the number of cases reported by this date in 2023.

Health authorities declared a dengue epidemic on March 25, and on May 20, confirmed the first death associated with dengue infection, an 85-year-old man residing in the San Juan region.

A total of 722 cases (55.93%) are men and 569 (44.07%) women. The age group with the highest number of cases is 40 to 59 years old with 245 (18.96%), followed by 10 to 14 years old with 207 (16.02%), and 15 to 19 years old with 194 (15.02%).
