Dengue in Paraguay (EW23) 284,502 cases

Health authorities in Paraguay reported that the number of cases reported in the first 23 epidemiological weeks of 2024 was 284,502, representing a 461% increase compared to the average of the last 5 years for the same period in the country. The cumulative incidence rate up to EW 23 of 2024 is 3,766 cases per 100,000 population, with 100 fatal cases recorded (case fatality rate of 0.035%).

Dengue cases in 2023 – 2024 and the last 5-year average

According to local sources, 510 new cases have been reported in the last 3 weeks (a further reduction of 43.7 percent compared to the previous three weeks) and 4 deaths.

Currently, the country is in an inter-epidemic phase, with a constant and gradual decrease in cases observed over the past 20 weeks.

The highest proportion of notifications and cases nationwide continues to correspond to the Central Department with 64 percent, followed by the capital Asunción and the departments of Itapúa (south), Paraguarí, and Guairá (central-south).

Ninety-one percent of dengue cases recorded throughout Paraguay correspond to serotype DEN-2, while only 9 percent belong to serotype DEN-1.

Regarding hospitalizations, a decline has also been observed for the past five weeks, with approximately 276 patients admitted for suspected arboviral infection in the last three weeks, of which 63 have a confirmed dengue diagnosis. Of these, six patients were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU).
