Dengue in Guatemala: 53,489 cases and 61 deaths this year.

Health authorities in Guatemala have reported 53,489 cases of dengue so far this year, compared to 8,569 in 2023, representing a 524% increase and a 788% increase compared to the average of the last five years. The number of cases is five times higher than in 2023.

There have been 61 deaths reported this year, 11 of them in the department of Escuintla, which accounts for the majority of the deaths. The deaths have also been reported more frequently among children aged 1 to 9 years.

Jutiapa, Santa Rosa, Quetzaltenango, Escuintla, and San Marcos are the regions with the most cases nationwide. According to statistics, there is a prevalence of cases among children under 15 years old, with the highest incidences in the age groups of 5 to 9 years and 10 to 14 years.

Of the total cases recorded this year, 82% correspond to dengue without warning signs and 17% to the variant that does present symptoms, which occurs more frequently in Zacapa, Suchitepéquez, and Jutiapa.
