Costa Rica will end 2024 with over 30,000 accumulated dengue cases, making it the second year with the highest reported cases since the record-breaking 50,000 cases in 2013. As of the most recent epidemiological report published on December 13, a total of 317 cases were registered during the last week.
The year 2024 began with an unexpected outbreak of cases in Alajuela and San José.
Up to epidemiological week 47 (EW47), a total of 30,230 dengue cases have been reported, including 195 classified as dengue with warning signs. The Central South region accounts for the highest number of cases, with 9,817 cases and a rate of 876.3/100,000 inhabitants in the Brunca region.
The cantons with the highest accumulated cases as of EW47 are:
- San José: 4,066 cases
- Alajuela: 3,180 cases
- Turrialba: 2,974 cases
- San Carlos: 1,552 cases
- Desamparados: 1,434 cases
The CNRV-INCIENSA has reported 1,264 PCR-positive samples, with 701 confirmed cases of serotype 3 and 206 of serotype 4.
