Dengue in Argentina: 240 Autochthonous Cases This Season

January 1, 2025

Health authorities in Argentina have recorded 254 confirmed dengue cases during the 2024/2025 season – which began in Epidemiological Week (EW) 31 of 2024 – up to EW 51. These cases are primarily concentrated in the northeastern (NEA) and central regions of the country. Of these, 240 had no history of travel.

Among the cases without a travel history, 36 were reported in the central region, 8 in the Cuyo region, 6 in the northwestern (NOA) region, and 190 in the northeastern (NEA) region.

Cases were reported throughout the weeks, mainly driven by notifications from the province of Formosa, where clusters of cases were identified in the departments of Capital, Patiño, Pilagás, Pirané, and Pilcomayo, albeit in small numbers.

Since EW 42, the first cases without travel history were reported in the central region, specifically in the province of Córdoba, mostly in the Capital department, followed by Colón, General San Martín, Río Primero, and Unión. Isolated cases without travel history were later reported in other provinces, with the departments with the highest numbers identified as follows: Mendoza (Luján de Cuyo, Capital, Guaymallén, and Godoy Cruz), Tucumán (Cruz Alta, Chicligasta, and Río Chico), CABA (Districts 1 and 3), Buenos Aires (La Matanza, Lanús, Hurlingham, General Pueyrredón, Lomas de Zamora, and Morón), Entre Ríos (Concordia, La Paz, Nogoya, and Paraná), Salta (Capital), Santa Fe (Castellanos and Rosario), Misiones (L.N. Alem), and La Rioja (Capital).

Additionally, three cases linked to organ transplants were confirmed in Buenos Aires and Santa Fe. One case from Salta was ruled out by the jurisdiction. A total of 85 cases were reported with a history of dengue vaccination within 30 days prior to symptom onset. Fourteen imported cases were confirmed from travelers with histories of travel to Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, India, and Peru.
