Autochthonous Dengue Case in Albinea, Reggio Emilia, Italy

September 3, 2024

Italian health authorities (IRCCS Directorate of the USL of Reggio Emilia) have reported an autochthonous case of dengue in the municipality of Albinea. The individual had no history of international travel. The person is in good health and lives with individuals who recently returned from a trip to an Asian country, where they likely contracted the disease. All family members are currently asymptomatic.

Upon notification of suspected cases, the extraordinary disinfestation protocol was immediately activated in collaboration with the Albinea Municipality in the areas where the case was located.

The protocol, outlined in the regional surveillance and control plan for arboviruses, is divided into three phases:

  • Adulticide treatment at dawn in public areas for three consecutive days;
  • Adulticide and larvicide treatments, along with the elimination of larval breeding sites in private areas (door-to-door);
  • Repetition of larvicide treatment in public drains.

At present, there are no other suspected cases, and there is no health alarm.
